Types Of Mattresses Explained

What type of mattress is best for me?

Advanced Pocket Spring Mattresses

Advanced pocket spring mattresses combine layers of individual pocket springs ranging in diameter from 2cm to 6cm, each spring housed within its own ‘pocket' so that it functions independently of the other springs.

All Button & Sprung mattresses are made using the most advanced pocket springs. Layers of tall Quad springs in the core of the mattresses are combined with layers or thousands of micro springs that are highly responsive to the body’s different pressure points and any movement at night.

These advanced pocket springs are glue-free and fully recyclable at the end of their lives, which can be decades.
Standard Pocket Sprung Mattresses
Pocket Sprung Mattresses nest springs in individual pockets for comfort and support.

Traditional pocket sprung mattresses offer better support than open coil mattresses. They’re good if you are a different weight to your partner because they offer stability and support from edge to edge. Pocket sprung mattresses will also feel more luxurious to lie on.

Pocket sprung mattresses typically come with options around the number of springs that you’d like. As with more advanced pocket spring mattresses, more springs means more support.
Open Coil Mattresses
The springs in open coil mattresses are all connected to each other and set within a wire frame, and are not enclosed in any material, hence the name ‘open coil’. This makes the mattress cheaper to produce vs a pocket sprung mattress (where each spring sits independently within a ‘pocket’ of material), but compromises comfort and support.

Rather like lying on a trampoline, there is motion transfer - if your partner moves, you are likely to feel that movement and you may meet each other in the middle of the bed every night.

Open coil mattresses tend to be mass produced at low cost.
Memory Foam Mattresses
Pocket Sprung Mattresses nest springs in individual ‘pockets’ for comfort and support.

Traditional pocket sprung mattresses offer better support than open coil mattresses. They’re good if you’re a different weight to your partner because they offer stability and from edge to edge. Pocket sprung mattresses will also feel more luxurious to lie on.

Pocket sprung mattresses typically come with options around the number of springs you’d like. As with the more advanced IQ:Spring mattress, more springs means more support.

We only sell IQ:Spring mattresses because we believe they provide the best possible comfort and support.
Latex Mattresses
There are two types of latex: natural and synthetic. Farmed from the sap of rubber trees, natural latex is produced using either Dunlop or Talalay processes. Synthetic latex comes from a mix of materials, most often a type of plastic called styrene-butadiene rubber.

The best forms of latex, made without the use of undesirable chemicals, are recyclable and bio-degradeable, but can be expensive.

Mattresses made with 100% latex, are very durable whilst the material is widely used in other mattress types. Unlike memory foam mattresses, latex mattresses will not react to your body weight or shape, but they can get just as hot at night.
Hybrid Mattresses
Hybrid Mattresses combine elements from other mattress types, pairing the coil-based core of innersprings with a thick comfort system similar to those found in latex or foam models. This combination often provides a balance of pressure relief and responsiveness.

Most hybrid mattresses use a pocketed coil support core, which contributes to a durable, springy, and breathable surface with minimal motion transfer and stable edge support. Hybrids may also use other coil types, including Bonnell, offset, or continuous wire, which are often affordable but more prone to motion transfer.

The materials and composition of hybrid comfort systems differ between models. They may include memory foam, polyfoam, latex, microcoils, fiber, or some combination of these components. Most hybrid comfort systems are designed to cradle the body, relieve pressure, and limit motion transfer.

A mattress has to grow on you, so we give you 100 nights to get comfortable with yours. And if you’re not 100% happy after that, we’ll exchange it for another one or give you your money back – no quibbles.
Traditional springs aren’t up to the job. So we invented our own; the patented IQ spring. Support is delivered just where and when you need it, so even if you and your partner are very different sizes you’ll experience the same level of comfort.
We only use natural fillings in our mattresses, with the wool, hemp and flax all produced at a farm just down the road from the factory. They’re harvested and blended into our hand-made mattresses, so you get the most natural, environmentally-friendly night’s sleep possible.
