Mattress Care

Your go-to guide for how to take care of and maintain your Button & Sprung mattress.

1. Rotating your mattress
A new pocket sprung mattress should be rotated every two weeks for the first 12 weeks. You'll need a partner or friend to help you use the sewn in handles to spin the mattress around on the base.

After this initial 12 week period, your mattress should be rotated with the seasons. Double sided mattresses (with fillings on both sides, which includes our Swaledale, Teesdale, Wensleydale and Wharfedale models) should be turned-or flipped-twice a year.

Rotating your mattress is important as it means you are sleeping on different parts of the mattress, preventing the natural fillings from compacting over time.
2. Use a natural mattress protector

We strongly recommend the use of a natural fibre mattress protector with your mattress. This will stop any spillages, or moisture from reaching your mattress surface, prolonging it's life. Sleeping on or near natural fibres also helps temperature regulation - by comparison, synthetic materials are not good at absorbing heat and moisture, making you hotter at night.

Natural mattress protectors are available from various retailers. We suggest a quality one from The Secret Linen Store.

3. Ensure the base is providing the right support
Pocket spring are by their very nature designed to contour to the shape of your body. In the same way, they follow the contours of the base upon which the mattress sits. It is important therefore, that the base your mattress sits upon is robust and supportive. We recommend a flat solid base - with or without springs embedded in the top of the base. Bed bases with a slatted base, with slats no further than 4cm apart, also offer good support.
4. Keeping the surface of your mattress clean
Remove debris from your mattress surface every few months with a soft brush. Avoid hoovering the surface, as this can dislodge the fillings over time. An inexpensive clothes or bath brush will work.

Stains and spillages should be absorbed using a dry cloth or paper towels. If you need to spot clean your mattress, do so only with a damp cloth and the mildest solution of soap and water - we find baby wipes work well. Do not saturate the mattress with water.

5. Tufting
Traditional methods of tufting ensure that the upholstery layers remain firmly in place. In the unlikely event that a tuft becomes dislodged, contact us and we will arrange to have the tuft replaced in your home.
6. Don't forget the bedding!
For the ultimate sleep experience, we recommend using natural bedding with our natural mattresses. Not only do natural materials feel luxurious, they will also allow your body to breathe whilst you're asleep. Synthetic materials, such as hollow fibre and polyester are insulators; they retain heat, often leading to overheating during the night. Natural materials regulate heat - keeping you cool during the summer and warm during the winter months.

Same goes for your duvet cover and pillow cases. Stick to cotton, linen, hemp or silk where possible.
