How to care for the fabric on your upholstered bed

Regular Maintenance

Vacuuming: Regular vacuuming removes dust, dirt, and debris from the fabric surface, preventing them from settling into the fibres. A lint roller can also work well. Be careful not to damage the surface texture of the fabric.

Brushing: Use a soft-bristled brush to gently loosen and remove surface dirt and pet hair.

Spot Cleaning

Act quickly: Attend to spills and stains immediately to prevent them from settling into the fabric.

Blot, don't rub: Use a clean cloth or paper towel to blot the stain, starting from the outer edge and working towards the centre to avoid spreading.

Use mild cleaners: For water-soluble stains, use a mild detergent diluted in water. For oil-based stains, use a solvent-based cleaner recommended for upholstery. Be careful not to saturate the upholstery with water.

Deep Cleaning

Steam Cleaning: Steam cleaning is an effective method for deep cleaning upholstery fabric. Use a steam cleaner with an upholstery attachment and follow the manufacturer's instructions, and do not saturate the bed with water or any other liquid.

Professional Cleaning: Consider professional upholstery cleaning services for thorough cleaning, especially for delicate fabrics or stubborn stains.

Protection and Prevention

Fabric Protection: Apply a fabric protector spray (such as a Scotch Guard) to guard against spills and stains. Test on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure compatibility.

Avoid Sunlight: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can fade and weaken upholstery fabric. Use curtains or blinds to protect furniture from direct sunlight.

Pet Protection: Place a washable cover or blanket over upholstered beds to protect them from pet hair, scratches, and accidents.

Odour Removal

Fabric Fresheners: Use fabric freshening sprays or DIY solutions with natural ingredients like essential oils to refresh upholstery fabric. Be very careful not to saturate the bed with water or any other liquid.

Baking Soda: Sprinkle baking soda over the upholstery fabric and let it sit for several hours to absorb odours. Vacuum thoroughly to remove the baking soda. Test on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure compatibility.
