Autumn bedroom trends: Woad blue

If you want to create a vibrant bedroom scheme this season, choose on-trend ‘woad’ blue – a rich, mysterious colour that’s making waves in both the fashion and interiors worlds. Brighter than navy, but darker than cobalt, it’s a beautiful shade that’s reminiscent of new denim or the night’s sky at dusk.

Obtained from the powdered, fermented leaves of the woad plant (which, confusingly, has bright yellow flowers), woad dye is believed to have been used as body paint by Ancient Celts such as Boudicca for battle. It was a popular dye throughout Europe until imported indigo from south east Asia gradually replaced it. The last woad mill closed in 1932 in Lincolnshire and today, just a handful of small woad producers remain, such as the Woad Centre in Norfolk.

At Giorgio Armani’s recent SS16 menswear collection show, the catwalk was awash with dark blue designs. Everything, from jackets and trousers to scarves and even shoe laces, was dyed a dark, inky blue, and the designer is rumoured to have used Italian-grown woad. Closer to home, British paint company Little Greene has just launched a new ‘Woad Blue’ paint.
It’s the perfect colour for a bedroom. Dark and dramatic, it goes well with crisp white elements and soft, pale, dove greys. Introduce a bold block of colour in the form of a wallpapered feature wall or an upholstered bed, then accessorise with watery blue patterned pieces such as dyed linen cushions and painterly throws.

To keep the look contemporary, opt for vibrant geometric prints – perhaps in the form of rugs, curtains or a wallpapered alcove – and keep the palette ultra simple for maximum impact: just woad blue, white and grey.
